Apple Watch

So here is a great review by The Verge. I can’t wait to get my hands on this device and try it out for myself.

Here is a overview chart of all the reviews of the Apple Watch so far:

Reviewer Watch model Verdict Thumbs up / Thumbs down
Mashable Lance Ulanoff 42mm “The Apple Watch is an excellent, elegant, stylish, smart and fundamentally sound device.”
New York Times Farhad Manjoo 42mm “Indeed, to a degree unusual for a new Apple device, the Watch is not suited for tech novices…It takes some time getting used to, but once it clicks, this is a power you can’t live without.”
The Verge Nilay Patel 42mm “For all of its technological marvel, the Apple Watch is still a smartwatch, and it’s not clear that anyone’s yet figured out what smartwatches are actually for.”
Wall Street Journal Geoffrey Fowler 42mm “I’ve found the Apple Watch isn’t a replacement for the iPhone, but it’s the right screen for many important things.”
Wall Street Journal Joanna Stern 38mm “Apple’s new watch wants to be your all-day helper. But the promise doesn’t always match reality.”
Bloomberg Business Joshua Topolsky 42mm “The Apple Watch is cool, it’s beautiful, it’s powerful, and it’s easy to use. But it’s not essential. Not yet.”
Re/code Lauren Goode 42mm “It is a well-designed piece of technology that will go through a series of software updates…”
Yahoo Tech David Pogue 42mm “The Apple Watch is light-years better than any of the feeble, clunky efforts that have come before it.”
CNET Scott Stein 42mm “You don’t need an Apple Watch. In many ways, it’s a toy: an amazing little do-it-all, a clever invention, a possibly time-saving companion, a wrist-worn assistant.”
USA Today Ed Baig 42mm “Apple Watch is an elegant combination of style and purpose, even if it indeed often serves as a stand-in for the iPhone tucked away in your pocket or purse.”
The Telegraph Matt Warman 42mm “It’s beautifully designed and frequently rather useful – but history suggests version two or three will be even better.”
Daring Fireball John Gruber 42mm “Time telling is where Apple Watch fares worst compared to traditional watches. That was inevitable. “
Techpinions Ben Bajarin ?? “Apple’s implementation delivers on the promise of notifications done right.”
Men’s Health Marissa Stephenson 38mm “I can say that the Watch is useful, fun, inspiring — but it can also be a little frustrating, needy, and redundant with my ever-present iPhone. It certainly demands attention.”
Style.com Nicole Phelps ?? “Our wrists simply can’t support a device big enough for everything we do on screens these days. I came to think of it as a filter instead, bringing what’s essential or pleasurable to me closer to me and editing out the rest.”
Daily Mail Mark Prigg 42mm “Apple undoubtedly has another hit on its hands – but like the iPad, it isn’t really obvious why you would want the product, until you try it.”
The Independent David Phelan ?? “If you’re tempted by a smartwatch, Apple’s is easily the best, with the most enjoyable interface, the most intriguing range of apps, immaculate build quality and a highly attractive design.”
SELF Liz Plosser ?? “After one week with the Watch, what amazes me even more is how it’s managed to untether me from my iPhone. It looks so cool, I’m more apt to wear it—and use it—all the time.”
TODAY Money Katie Linendoll 38mm “I think it does live up to the hype in the sense that it’s both fashion and function. I think Apple nailed it in the sense that it’s a statement piece as much as it is a timepiece.”

iPhone 6 Plus Review

iOS8
iOS8

So to get this out of the way I have been a Android user for the past four years but this phone and iOS 8 with third party keyboards, extensibility, and the new share  sheets and not to mention handoff and continuity brought me back to Apple.

Design

This phone feels great to hold with its rounded corners and even feels better in the hand with a case like the Apple leather one. Also coming from Android the button layout is what I’m use to with the volume buttons on one side and the power button on the other side.

Performance

This phone screams with everything you normally do like general use, games, browsing the web, playing with all kinds of apps.

Camera

Again this is the best and easiest to use smartphone camera out there especially with photo apps being able to now have access to manual controls of the camera.

Battery

This phone has lasted more than 12 hours of heavy use for me on a consistent basis.

HTC M8 Review

Image

So about two weeks ago I dropped my Nexus 5 on the cement pavement and broke the screen. But it was still usable so I decided that it was time for a new phone and I chose to try out the HTC M8. So far I have to say overall it is a great upgrade.

Display

The display is a 5 inch 1080p LCD display with great viewing angles and very good colour accuracy as well as just being a great display to look at or watch things on for long periods of time. The display is also able to withstand being out in the rain with no problem working at all.

Camera

The camera is really great if you want to share pictures online or view them on screen but not the best for printing pictures or viewing on large computer or TV screens. The camera is still the same 4MB Ultra pixel as before with some new tricks and faster auto focusing the big new feature is that the camera allows you to focus on the foreground or background. Also the gallery app has and camera app have been reworked to be faster and easier to use. The camera also allows you to go into full manual mode and change settings like iso, exposure, white balance, and such.

Software

HTC Sense 6 is a very fine software overlay on Android Kitkat 4.4.2. Sense has been toned down and Blink feed is actually usable and can even be turned off. Alot of HTC apps have also been broken out and put in the Play store to be updated more frequently and allow the Play Edition HTC M8 to use them. Also keeping with the last HTC One there is still a very usable IR remote.

Performance

Overall not much to say here except that I have had no problems with using the phone browsing heavily online and streaming Netflix or YouTube or the like.

Battery life

Overall very impressed here I get on average 12 to 15 hours on this phone with very heavy use of listening to audio very heavy social media and browsing and lightweight gaming. By the end of the night it is in power saving mode which does turn off some things like auto sync and if you want to get even more use but very basic use you can turn on the extreme power savings which only lets you use the phone and messaging apps and a few more basic apps like calculator.

Nexus 5 Review

Image

So I got my black Nexus 5 in Nov and it is super great:

Hand Feel  & Screen

So this is a soft touch  plastic phone that is surrounded by a 5 inch great looking 1080p LCD screen that is great to look at and use every day.

LTE & Battery Life

It’s my first phone with LTE and it is super fast when on LTE 24 down and 15 up on Telus.  Battery life is pretty good I average about 9 hours with 2 hour screen on time. Using LTE and WiFi and pretty heavy use of the phone doing things like web browsing, texting, phone calls, listening to podcasts as well as social updates and some game play.

Camera

I find the camera is pretty good it does take a bit of time to focus which is my main complaint with it. Also for the extra colour depth and just plain better picture make sure you are using the HDR+ mode. Plus make sure you upload your pictures to Google+ sense it will Auto Awesome the pictures and video.

KitKat

I love Android 4.4 with its Google Experience Launcher and all the other little tweaks and the Hangouts Messaging. But with that messaging app it does not combine Hangout messages and SMS in the same contact conversions which is annoying.

Price

Is really good off contract from Google play 16GB $349CDN and 32GB is $399CDN.

Overall

It is a great phone that gives you the standard Google experience and will get updates quickly from Google.
